If you’re searching for the perfect career-enhancing, luxury living, high-salary expat destination, Singapore has it all and more.

For a good while, Singapore was a well-kept secret for its offerings of the most desirable aspects of expat life, at least until annual surveys spilled the beans on this tiny city-state. Nowadays, it’s expats’ ‘somewhere over the rainbow’ from which those who’ve made it there don’t want to leave, ever.

The latest Expat Explorer survey says it all, with Singapore beating out all comers for just about every aspect of expat life. The world’s best expatriate haven for the second year in succession, the tiny island nation’s plethora of advantages draws the brightest and best from across the world.

The quality of life here is off the chart and includes everything from political through environmental stability, cleanliness and personal safety to education, health and transportation. Most importantly, those who make it their home can expect hefty increases in salary placing them in the ‘wealthy’ category and exposing them to the envy of their friends back in the home country.

What said home-country friends may not realise is that salaries in Singapore are in the stratosphere for one simple reason – the city state’s high cost of living. One of the planet’s most expensive cities for everything from health, housing and education to cars and the costs of owning one, living, working and playing in the island nation is a luxury occupation from start to almost finish.

The one exception to the high living costs comes with one of the city’s most famous delights – its fabulous, multinational selection of foods. From five-star eateries to stalls in the markets, there’s every culinary delight from across Asia and even Europe on offer at various price levels which, for the quality and taste, aren’t exactly cheap as chips, but can’t be considered expensive.

Expats in the city all agree the choice of cuisines is one of the best aspects of living here.In spite of Singapore’s high cost of living, most expatriates on relocation packages manage to save far more than they could in their home countries, provided health insurance plans are provided by their employers. All told, it’s no wonder the city-state wins out time after time in surveys and studies on expat life and preferences.
