Following the bad news of the Australia Broadcasting Corporation’s upcoming shutdown, the good news is that Sky TV is to launch its own Australian Channel to fill at least part of the gap caused by the departure of the popular ABC channel.

Devastated fans of ABC’s satellite TV offerings can now take comfort in the fact that Sky News is taking over the slot, although its initial PR suggests that coverage may be somewhat restricted. News, sports, business and politics are to be its main focus, all locally produced and aimed at international viewers.

China, the Middle East and 178 other countries will be able to receive the signals, and programmes will also be streamed via the web in association with Globecast Australia. Promised are Australian culture, a 24-hour business channel, Australian industry showcases and reports on the continent as an investment destination.

Broadcasting solutions will be cloud-based, in association with technology partners Akamai and Brightcove, both working with Globecast Australia to give access to viewers across the world. The partnerships are expected to be long-term and, for Aussies who appreciate the content, will at least give an alternative focused on their home country.
