The search for the perfect overseas retirement haven is crucial to many retirees’ plans for the future, and involves finding a dream home in a sunny, friendly environment such as Portugal’s romantic Algarve region.

Known for several decades by literally thousands of UK expats as a great place to live, a recent survey has identified the Algarve as an all-time favourite. Its medieval cities, coastal fishing villages and small towns, local markets, delicious food and wine and warm weather are all topped off by friendly, established communities.

According to the magazine ‘Live and Invest Overseas’, the Algarve’s 100,000 resident expat pensioners love every aspect of their new lives. The Retire Overseas Index covers a wide range of the world’s favourite expat havens, and the peaceful southern coast of Portugal with its sparkling white-painted villages and azure seas is high on the list.

A welcoming, ready-made community of like-minded souls, a lower cost of living than in most other European destinations and a good choice of international-standard medical facilities are all features here. Sunny and warm for much of the year, the Algarve’s weather is free from the freezing winters and searingly hot summers of many other expat destinations.

At the present time, real estate prices are reasonable, and the pace of life is reassuringly gentle. The traditional life of locals living in the hills backing the ocean beaches is mostly unchanged and, although Portuguese is a tricky language to learn, culture shock for new arrivals is limited to slowing down to match the local, laid-back ambience.
