Survey reveals the 17 best world cities for expats

The latest expat survey gives an extensive glimpse into expatriate lives and identifies the best world cities for quality of life and career success.

The InterNations Expat Insider 2016 survey was based on all aspects of expat life including career prospects, lifestyle quality, friendliness of locals and even the weather. No less than 17 world cities were highly rated, giving prospective expatriates a choice of cultures, salary levels and more.

Top of the range was Melbourne, Australia, with 80 per cent of expats commending the city for its work-life balance and wide range of leisure activities, giving it an overall rating of 91 per cent. Second in line was the US city of Houston, rated for its relatively low cost of living and ease of settling down.In third place was Madrid, popular for making friends and feeling welcome, with its low cost of living a welcome bonus.

The German city of Dusseldorf is famous for its arts and fashion scene, with expats commenting on its excellent quality of life. Sparkling clean Singapore was noted for its high average wages and top-class standard of living.

Vienna’s great weather and high standard of living scored points, and Munich’s work-life balance as well as its beer festival were popular with expats. Sydney came out as a hub for financial jobs as well as for its spectacular surroundings and leisure activities, and Mexico City scored due to its low cost of living and glorious weather.

Friendly Toronto made settling in a breeze, and Barcelona won out for jobs, social and leisure activities and beautiful beaches. Breathtaking scenery and luxury lifestyles made Basel popular with career junkies, and Frankfurt was rated as a jobs hub and for its ease of settling in.

Geneva offers top job opportunities and a luxurious lifestyle, albeit at a high price, and Berlin’s jobs market as well as its suitability for families gave it 15th place in the listings. Without a doubt, Zurich is one of the top cities in the world for quality of life, with its high salaries compensating for sky-high prices.

New York was rated at 17th with its high cost of living noted, but expat respondents praised its career prospects and the availability of a massive choice of everything from restaurants through concerts, exhibitions and nightlife to the world’s best shopping. Its multi-racial population ensures there’s never a dull moment in the ‘Big Apple’.
