A four-year-old British boy has drowned in a swimming pool at a family holiday villa in Spain.

The boy is believed to have been fallen into the pool at a property in the Costa del Sol resort of Mijas, while playing with other children during a gathering hosted by his parents.

A teenage boy alerted adults, with a parent attempting to revive the child before paramedics arrived at the villa in the Mijas Golf resort in Las Lagunas, Mijas.

However, he was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the arrival of medics on Sunday evening.

The incident happened at 9pm in the detached villa, situated in a residential street, a short drive from La Cala de Mijas, on the coast between Marbella and Fuengirola.

The cul-de-sac overlooks a golf course which is popular with British expats and tourists.

A spokesman for the Guardia Civil, the police force called to the scene, said: “The boy was from a family who were staying at a house where there was a party being held

“In the house there is a swimming pool. The child - who was four - went into the swimming pool and could not swim and he has died.”

A Foreign Office spokesman said: “We can confirm the death of a British national in Spain on August 16.

“We are in contact with local authorities and have provided the family with advice on bereavement abroad, including repatriation.”
