HSBC’s Expat Explorer survey gives one of the best comparisons of locations suitable for career development, with Switzerland placed high on the list.

Selecting the right relocation destination for a move to expat life isn’t easy, as it depends as much on personal preference as it does on salary and perks. However, for career development, Europe is still a great choice, with Switzerland considered by expats to be the best for salaries, job security, working conditions and lifestyle. Over 66 per cent of expat professionals working in the country agree that salaries are in advance of those in their home country. over half those surveyed are more than happy with the working culture and slightly less than half feel secure in their positions.

Europe as a whole performed well in the survey, with Sweden, Germany and Russia just behind Switzerland’s top spot. The remainder of the top ten countries for expats including Asian and Middle Eastern locations placed the UAE and Singapore as favourites for many respondents. Secure in the number 10 slot was the USA, considered by its expat professionals as being the best destination for career enhancement in the Americas.

The survey isn’t all about money, as lifestyle is an important consideration when deciding on relocation. Again, Europe comes out as popular for those who want more than just a decent salary to show for their time overseas. Career enhancing skills are best developed in the UK, with over half of respondents saying it gives better opportunities for development. Three quarters of expats rate Sweden as giving the world’s best work/life balance, especially when compared with respondents’ home countries.

Generally, job security is highest in Europe, with France, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden also rating highly in the sector. Spain gained the ninth position as regards work/life balance, but tropical Philippines hit the bottom of the list for career progression, work/life balance and job security.
