Environmental concerns are creeping up the list of must-haves for a successful life overseas, but healthy places to live aren’t just found outside major world cities.

A recent survey by CNN News identified no less than 10 world cities which offer a healthy lifestyle for migrants. Surprisingly, the giant metropolis of New York featured in the final list for its facilities and the healthy habits of most of its millions of residents.

Given that clean air and water aren’t as pristine in world cities as in the countryside, several of the top ten cities don’t come as much of a surprise. For example, Copenhagen’s surroundings and excellent healthcare provisions explain its position, and Vancouver’s setting and numerous parks and green spaces have earned the metropolis several well-deserved livable city awards.

Those who don’t know Havana might be amazed to find it amongst other winners, but the life expectancy of its citizens is as high as any city in the USA and its low infant mortality rate is far more impressive than America’s. Healthcare is of excellent quality, even taking into account that Cuba spends just 4.4 per cent of the US’s per citizen input.

Cuba’s plethora of local health screening clinics and intensive vaccination programmes are two of its strengths, and educating its citizens to look after themselves and each other plays an important part in the Cuban culture. The survey found that, in general, the concept of culture determines healthy lifestyles as much as do local healthcare systems and eco-friendly, green surroundings.

Other cities on the list are Okinawa with its tropical warmth, Monte Carlo, Singapore, California’s Napa, Sweden’s Jonkoping and Melbourne. Potential migrants looking for a healthy life could do worse than settle in one of these top ten locations.
