The recently published Expat Explorer Survey 2012 reports that Canada is by far the best expat destination in the world for raising a family.

The land of the great outdoors came top in the survey’s Raising Children Abroad league tables, with no fewer than 5,300 expats voting for Canada’s excellent healthcare system, friendly locals and healthy living. Expat parents said that their children were more active in playing outdoors and sports than before the family emigrated.

Factors involved in Canada’s top spot included the 40 per cent of respondents who had noticed their kids turning off the TV or computer in favour of playing outside much more often than in their home countries. 45 per cent of those surveyed felt their kids benefitted from the extra exercise and 25 per cent pf parents added they were taking more outdoor exercise as a result.

Canada also scored high as a retirement destination, with 52 per cent saying they were considering the move after retirement kicked in. Heathcare and new friends were as important as they were to families.

Economically, however, only two out of five working expats in the survey said they were earning more than in their country of origin. Many stated it was a fair exchange to have better, healthier and more friendly living conditions as against a higher salary.
