Police on the Thai resort island of Phuket have yet to investigate reported links between a violent hatchet attack on a French expat and a Russian abduction case.

Eric Seigneurin, an expat who runs the Blue Garden Resort and Spa in Cherng Talay, sustained four-inch-deep wounds to the back and side of his head after being attacked with a hatchet near his home on 8 February.

Despite stories linking the attack to an alleged kidnapping in which 22-year-old Russian Iana Strizheus was discovered battered and bruised in Mr Seigneurin’s hotel on 16 March last year, police have yet to carry out an investigation. The body of the woman’s boyfriend, thirty-nine-year-old Alexey Slabinskiy, was discovered two weeks later.

Relatives in Russia were contacted shortly after the couple disappeared in a suspected kidnapping case on 7 March last year and told they were in need to money.

Cherng Talay Police spokesman Lieutenant Jirasak Sungwisut said their main priority at present was to hunt down Mr Seigneurin’s attacker, adding that he could not say if it was connected to the Russian incident as they required more information first. He said that the Frenchman had yet to make a statement.

The spokesman went on to say that once police had made an arrest they would expand their investigation.
