A Saudi Arabian family received the shock of their lives when their daughter informed them that she had fallen in love with an Indian labourer and wanted to wed him.

A report in the Gulf state said that the angry girl’s father went straight to the Indian’s employer in an attempt to get him to deport him but was unsuccessful.

The Saudi woman, 23, informed her parents that she was intent on marrying her lover, who works in the capital, Riyadh, as a delivery driver for a store in a shopping centre. She told them she first met him in the mall and had been in contact with him ever since.

The report said that she told her mother she was deeply in love with the man because he “filled her life with love”. However, the mother was far from impressed and immediately informed her husband on the news.

The woman is believed to be determined to wed the Indian man despite the objections of her family, according to the report.

Saudi Arabia has a large number of expatriate workers from South Asia but for a local woman to date a migrant labourer is almost unheard of and looked down upon by the majority of the middle- to upper-class.
