Scots expat Steve Balfour’s body was found in a Pattaya police morgue a month after he disappeared during a visit to his Thai daughter.

Steve Balfour, a security consultant working in Basra,Iraq, went missing on May 14 during one of his regular visits to Pattaya to see his six-year old daughter Georgina, The child was living with Steve’s former Thai wife, Nan Kidaw, following the couple’s acrimonious divorce last year. Pattaya police found Steve’s body in a Walking Street room on May 15, but failed to inform his family or the British Embassy.

Having not heard from him for some days, his family in Scotland began to worry and contacted a local English language newspaper to help trace him. According to former Australian police officer Mike Williams, the manager of the resort where Steve always stayed, after he’d checked the rented room and found Steve’s personal belongings and passport he contacted the British Embassy to report his disappearance. Nothing, apparently, was done to help trace the missing expat.

By then, Steve’s family were convinced something bad had happened, especially after a witness reported the former soldier been attacked at the Billabong Golf Club by a ‘large American’. Former Scots Guard Malcolm Farquharson, Steve‘s closest friend in Pattaya, spent two weeks searching for him without success. He also contacted the British Embassy which, he said, didn’t seem to be very interested.

One month later, Steve’s body was found in a Pattaya police morgue, having been finally identified by a distinctive tattoo of his daughter’s name. The body had originally been found in a room above a Pattaya bar, but nothing had been done to identify him at the time. After the discovery, a friend in the UK told reporters about a Messenger conversation she’d had with Steve, during which he told her that if anything happened to him whilst in Thailand, his former wife would be responsible.

According to Pattaya police, the case is being investigated, and it’s known that a young prostitute was found in the room with Steve’s naked body. A British Embassy spokesperson told the press that his family was receiving support, but there has been no mention of possible involvement in the murder by his ex-wife, nor are there any details about the cause of death although an autopsy has been ordered.
