Two Algerian men have been arrested in Spain and face charges of committing burglaries with some assistance from the meows of a cat.

The investigation and hunt for the men started in May, after a British expat informed police that her purse had been stolen amid the sound of meows.

Authorities believe that the men targeted vehicles in the city centre of Estepona, a popular Costa del Sol destination among expats. Their plan involved placing a recording device by the motors of cars, then wait for their targets to start the vehicle, which in turn triggered cat sounds.

The men would then approach the motorist and say that a cat could have got stuck in the motor, and while one of the suspects helped the car owners look for the cat, the other would nab their belongings from the car.
