As conflicts erupt in European as well as the Middle East and Asia, the UK Foreign Office has stepped up its travel warnings to both tourists and expats.

France is the number one target for the latest British authority warnings to UK residents as well as visitors to the popular tourism and expat hub. A triple warning has been issued, with the expected terrorist backlash against France’s military intervention in the war between the Kurds and ISIS at the top of the list.

According to the French government, security measures have been tightened since the Islamist group issued threats of violent retaliation. Expat residents and travellers on the mainland are urged to be vigilant, and Britons on Corsica have been warned to take care after recent explosions were credited to a nationalist group on the island.

Those travelling to or near France’s Channel ports are advised to be alert for illegal immigrants attempting to hijack vehicles on their way to the UK. Drivers, according to the Foreign Office, should keep their doors locked in traffic and when parked.

On the other side of the world, UK expats living and working in Hong Kong are being advised to avoid the present protests against moves by the Chinese government to roll back the former British colony’s democratic processes. Public transport and traffic are disrupted and police are using tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protestors in the city centre.

Warnings centred on other countries focus on Nigeria’s Eid-al-Adha festival and the country’s Independence Day, traditionally a time for violent attacks by terrorist groups such as Boku Haram. Avoiding religious sites and services, public places and crowded areas is advised.

Unsurprisingly, Ukraine, especially the region abutting the border with Russia, is high on the Foreign Office’s severe travel warning list. In addition to the continuing armed clashes, roaming armed gangs are known to be kidnapping and robbing foreign travellers.
