Police in Costa Rica are investigating the disappearance of a missing Canadian native, announced the Canadian embassy and Central American country’s Judicial Investigation Police (OIJ).

Police discovered an abandoned vehicle with its roadside doors left open along Route 32 on Tuesday evening. Upon further investigation, they found that the car was registered to one Ryan Piercy, a Canadian man who was last seen earlier in the day.

Piercy’s wife told OIJ director Francisco Seguro that her husband had left for work on Tuesday morning and that she had not seen or heard from him since, while her efforts to contact him had proven unsuccessful. Seguro described the disappearance as "extremely strange".

Businessman Piercy is a Canadian national with Costa Rican citizenship. In his adopted country he manages an organisation that helps foreign nationals obtain Costa Rican residency. Police confirmed that he had no criminal record.

Canadian embassy representative Michael Martin said they were offering consular assistance to Piercy’s family and liaising with local authorities in an effort to obtain any information that could be of use. The spokesman, who was speaking in the capital San Jose, said he could offer no further details because of the Canadian Privacy Act.
