Expats across the world celebrate the Festive Season in many different ways, with Istanbul’s expat community offering a great choice of social events spanning the entire month of January.

Even for those who’re not exactly social butterflies, there’s something about Christmas and the New Year which draws the crowds to specially set-up events, performances and get-togethers. Perhaps it’s childhood memories of Christmas and New Year customs long past, when friends and relatives joined together to visit everyone in their circle and celebrate. For those living, working or retiring overseas, their expat communities take the place of close family and childhood friends, and the get-togethers ensure no-one needs to feel alone.

Expats in Istanbul are especially well-served with Festive Season events ranging from a Toastmasters’ meeting and a Stand-Up Comedy night to musical evenings and much more. Most of the events are also held weekly or monthly throughout the year, giving expats a full calendar of events and new arrivals a chance to get to know the community. One all-time favourite is Standup Turkey, a fun-filled standup comedy evening featuring a multinational group of young comedians doing their best to have the entire audience in hysterics.

Another popular event is Spoken World Istanbul, a fun-filled open-mike evening where expats take the stage and perform any which way they choose for six minutes. Karaoke is an all-time favourite, with the volunteer organisers presenting an event every month. Starting at 9.30 and ending at 2.30 a.m., the popularity of this event ensures there’s always a queue of expats waiting to amaze their friends with their as yet unsung talent.

Wherever in the world there’s an expat community, there’s a Quiz night, and Istanbul’s no exception to the rule. The local Trivia Night, as it’s called, takes place once a month and draws expats hoping to amaze their friends with their extensive general knowledge . Singles can turn up and be allocated to a team, and the top three teams win prizes. One thing’s for sure, not one single expat in Istanbul needs to be alone during Christmas and the New Year as well as during the months to come.
