Expats who took part in the International Labour Day celebrations in Qatar were given gifts and praised for their efforts by officers from the emirate’s Ministry of Labour.

Spokespeople from the Labour Ministry stressed expat workers’ vital contribution to the country’s dynamic development, and focused on the necessity of providing a secure, safe environment for all the emirate’s workers. Expat employees from a number of communities took part in the celebrations and were gifted with souvenirs, packed meals and other signs of local appreciation.

Speaking to the assembled crowd, National Human Rights Committee director Jaber al Huwayil said that the committee was dedicated to giving awareness to the expat community of their rights and how to ensure them. He explained that his agency filed reports on human rights in the workplace and conducted regular field studies to investigate working conditions.

Workers’ welfare and health, he added, was essential for maintaining and strengthening the economy of the country. Occupational Heath official Dr Mohammed al Hajji agreed, saying that the emirate’s workforce must be protected from occupational hazards and communicable diseases by the use of preventative measures, medical care and increased awareness of the causes of accidents.
