The South American nation of Ecuador has been ranked the best place to retire abroad, with Latin American countries dominating the list.

The International Living magazine’s Annual Global Retirement Index looked at factors such as cost of living, healthcare and climate in ranking a total of 25 popular countries among expat retirees on the overall quality of life offered.

Although prices in Ecuador are on the up, there are still many excellent real estate deals available, according to the senior editor at InternationalLiving.com, Dan Prescher.
Furthermore, the average cost of living for retired couples is just US$1.400, while they are also offered 50 per cent off sporting events and cinema tickets, discounts on public transport and, perhaps most significantly, reduced fares on prices of the country.

It is not the first time the country has come out on top of such a poll, with it being ranked the best place for expats to live by expat network InterNations, which surveyed 14,000 people last autumn.

Ecuador was not the only country in the Americas to score so well in the retirement index, with Panama coming in second place because of the benefits and retirement programmes it offers expats. The top five was completed by Mexico, Malaysia and Costa Rica respectively.
