US coffee shop chain Starbucks is aiming to attract expats living in the Romanian capital Bucharest by launching one of its high-end outlets in the city’s Pipera district.

Starbucks Reserve Strip Mall is to open its first shop under the brand in the Eastern European city on 12 February, confirmed the company, as it continues to expand into the former communist country.

The Starbucks Reserve Strip Mall, which will be the 13th Starbucks in Romania, comes shortly after one was opened in the touristic Old Town. It will be situated on Iancu Nicolae Boulevard in the northern Bucharest district of Pipera, where a large number of expats live and socialise.

Starbucks Romania district manager Bogdan Guzga said customers could buy the limited edition Reserve coffee in the new shop after the company agreed a deal to work alongside top Romanian barista Cezare Cartes, who represented the country at the World Barista Championship in Seattle last April.

The chain, which has similar high-end outlets in London, Amsterdam and Moscow, said it is aiming to have 35 coffee shops across Romania within the next five years.
