Abu Dhabi is now rated as the world’s safest city for expats.

In a recent survey undertaken by Numbeo, Abu Dhabi has been rated the safest city in the world for expats and their families. For the iconic UAE city, the rating is the third consecutive time it’s topped the 330 other world cities surveyed, beating out even Dubai and its sixth-place rating. Safety and security as well as a lack of discrimination is one of expatriates’ major requirements, especially if they’ve relocated along with their families.

As well as being a hub for career development whilst earning a high salary, the emirate has much to recommend it as regards quality of life and lifestyle, with many favourites including the Mangrove National Park, Emirates Park Zoo and the rides at Ferrari World all catering for kids of all ages. The beach scene is a major attraction, and weekends at Hudayriat Island with its 600 metre beach are great for families. Another must-visit is the Abu Dhabi Louvre museum, crammed with historic and modern artifacts from across the world including Egyptian relics and even Andy Warhol artwork.

Abu Dhabi’s iconic history is celebrated at its oldest building, the Qasr Al Hosn fort. The palace was home to the emirate’s rulers and now has a section given over to traditional Arab crafts, many of which are still practiced today. Traditionally, Abu Dhabi was famed for its pearl divers, with pearls an important contribution to the economy in days long past. New arrivals can take pearl-diving trips and be taught how to harvest the oysters, a cultural experience in its own right.

For expatriate professionals, Abu Dhabi’s many activities and sights all give clues as to why the emirate is such a popular location for career-minded expats, and the safety aspect is an important bonus for those arriving with their families. Yes, there are hordes of tourists and the weather can become uncomfortably hot in season, but knowing your family will be safe and well-looked after all across the city and it's attractions is all part of discovering this fascinating emirate.
