A vicious attack on a British pensioner couple and their son by a gang of Thai men took place during the Songkran festival in the upscale beach resort of Hua Hin.

The popular resort of Hua Hin is best known as the summer residence of Thailand’s much-revered King, and is home to a good number of expat retirees as well as a tourist hub. A favourite time to visit is early April, with its traditional Songkran festival filling the streets with water-throwing revellers.

For an elderly British couple and their son, however, their enjoyable holiday turned to a nightmare when they were attacked by a group of drunken Thai men and left unconscious on the street. According to media reports taken from CCTV footage of the attack, the violence seemed to erupt without cause, with the father and son being kicked and punched whilst the mother was hit in the face and fell to the ground.

Thai onlookers stood back and watched whilst a lone western expat attempted to help the elderly couple and their son, only to be violently attacked himself. Posting later on a local expat forum, he described the incident, stating that the first thing he saw was an older woman being punched in the face by a Thai man whilst an elderly gentleman and his son were lying in the street being punched and kicked.

No-one except himself, he wrote, attempted to help the terrified trio, even although the street was crowded with local revellers. When he attempted to push one of the Thai men away from the woman, he was attacked and now needs dental surgery as well as sustaining severe bruising from punches and Thai boxing kicks.

According to a source who’d spoken with the westerner, the Thai men had been seen roaming the area looking for trouble. The elderly couple and their son are now in a local hospital, having been knocked out and left bleeding on the street by the gang. Thai police are believed to have arrested several Thai men and are still looking for others apparently involved in the attack. Hua Hin is especially popular with Western retirees but, as with the rest of the country, has its own problems with violent crime and alcohol abuse.
