Would-be expat professionals researching suitable countries for family life invariably put personal security and safety at the top of their requirements lists.

When moving overseas to take up a new job involves taking the family along, it’s essential to consider personal safety and security as a top priority. In today’s increasingly unstable world, the task of ensuring loved ones are protected from threats of all kinds is challenging. The results of regular expat surveys such as the latest InterNations offering are made up of genuine expat reports on every aspect of life in 191 countries, giving prospective expatriates an overview of each destination.

Choosing one of the top countries in surveys' safety and security sections is a straightforward way to ensure loved ones are not under threat. The recently designated top 11 world destinations aren’t just in the West, but range across Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Significantly, the USA and UK aren’t included, and the tiny state of Luxembourg tops the list for its practically non- existent crime rate.

The island nation of Singapore rates second-best for its reassuringly low statistics on everything from corporate crime to personal safety. Japan’s well-known peacefulness and politeness is equalled by its status as a safe destination for expats, and Canada’s consistently low crime rates earned it a high ranking in the survey.

The popular expat destination of Malta offers a high standard of security and safety, and Switzerland is well regarded for its lack of violent crime and peaceful environment. Norway scores high as a great place for families, with the safety aspect a major draw, and New Zealand’s magnificent scenery together with its low crime statistics make it the perfect destination for families with young children.

Finland scored 70 per cent of expat votes for personal safety, and Taiwan was another place popular for its safety as well as for its career prospects. Perhaps surprisingly, given its Middle East location and the present regional tensions, Oman is also considered a prime, safe destination for expat professionals. Crime rates are low, as is the comparative cost of living, and it’s a good destination for those wishing to save money in advance of their return to the home country.
