Undeniably one of the most perfect expat hubs on the planet, the city state of Singapore is equipped with everything expatriates need to live their dream lives.

Some 25 per cent of Singapore’s total population of around 5.6 million hail from all over the world, attracted by job opportunities, high wages, a civilised, luxurious lifestyle and some of the world’s most varied and delicious foods. Other attractions, especially for expats with trailing spouses and kids, include total safety, excellent heathcare and a great choice of international schools.

The city state’s population encompasses four major ethnic groups – Eurasian, Indian, Chinese and Malaysian – plus over a million expatriates from dozens of countries worldwide. It’s a gateway to the rest of Asia, with foreign nationals able to enjoy the vast continent’s cuisines, entertainments and the experience of working alongside nationals from many diverse Asian cultures. Technologically advanced on the world scale, one of the city’s major industries is the IT sector, offering high-paying positions to talented expatriates.

Another temptation for expat professionals is the number of international corporations with bases in Singapore, including AMEX, Microsoft, the Gunvor Group, Capital Land and Bain & Co. The city state is also home to the Southeast Asian broadcasting hub, with Discovery Channel, ESVPN, the Asian Food Channel and even the BBC churning out programmes 24/7. Oilmen can find opportunities within a number of companies including Shell Eastern Trading.

Living the Singapore lifestyle doesn’t involve being contained in guarded expat-only compounds as foreigners can choose the best location for their individual needs. Communication is rarely a problem due to the four national languages including English and Mandarin, and many Singaporeans can get by in other European languages. The major business districts are found in the south and east of the conurbation, with living close to the workplace perfectly possible. For expats with school-age children, six international schools offer top quality education, and Singapore’s world-standard heathcare provisions give a reassuring bonus for expat families.
