As the UK immigration debate rages on across the country, a group of Conservative members of parliament have come up with what they beleive is the answer.

Visas to live and work in the UK, says the backbencher Free Enterprise Group, should be sold off to wealthy foreigners to the highest bidder at specialist visa auctions. This, they consider, would ensure that only those able to contribute significantly to the UK economy would be able to gain entry.

Their plan for a market-based immigration system goes much further than the immigration changes in Australia and Canada, as well as overtaking by several miles the proposals in the US’s attempt to overhaul its broken system. The groups has equally radical suggestions for other aspects of British life, including encouraging start-ups by foreign immigrants.

The author of the report, George Freeman MP, insists that the country must become more enterprise-friendly if it’s to survive the 21st century intact. A pro-immigration system based on guaranteed returns for the privilege of work and residence visas, he adds, requires, bold, new thinking and a global vision, with selling visas to migrants who could afford a steep price seen as less bureaucratic than the present system.
