More and more people are looking to emigrate to Costa Rica after retiring with factors such as low cost of living and beautiful surroundings proving major draws among expats.

Four out of the top five destinations for retirement are in either South or Central America, according to the International Living’s 2015 Retirement Index. This year Costa Rica has entered in at number five on the list, behind Ecuador, Panama, Mexico and Malaysia respectively.

The report described Costa Rica as a “nature-lover’s dream”, adding that the blue ocean, spectacular volcanoes and jagged mountains gave it an extra special wow factor. It went on to note that in addition to the fact it was one of the region’s most peaceful regions, it also boasted affordable healthcare and housing and plenty to do to keep you active.

Other factors such as long stretches of undeveloped and deserted beaches on both the Pacific and Caribbean coastlines, dense jungles featuring exotic wildlife, clear lakes and lush green valleys also enticed retirees to the country.

Meanwhile, the government is also said to be extremely accommodation when it comes to how easy it is to resettle there, with pension schemes making it relatively hassle free to gain citizenship. A pension-based residency is offered to those who can prove they have a minimum of US$1,000 per month coming in from a permanent fixed retirement fund.
