A British woman living in Portugal has been found dead and buried in the garden of her Portuguese villa.

The expat, identified only as Brenda, 72, had been living with her boyfriend in Alcalar, Portimao, in the Algarve, but was reported missing by her son in the UK when he became worried after not having any contact with her for a couple of months.

Portuguese authorities carried out excavations on the residence on Tuesday, after being informed that she was potentially missing by their UK counterparts, and are said to have found her body buried beneath cement in the garden.

The British Embassy confirmed that a UK national was reported in the Algarve and that her last known contact with anyone was on 14 December. It added that they were providing her relatives with consular assistance.

A 59-year-old man, thought to be the deceased’s partner, was arrested at the house the same night of the discovery; he has since claimed she committed suicide. The man, Nigel, was detained on murder charges after Portuguese police ruled they had sufficient grounds to be suspicious of his involvement.

Locals have described the suspect as a “nice man” who helped out in the village, and that they were “shocked” he had been arrested. They said he was a regular at a local café and was often seen on the golf course. Brenda, meanwhile was said to have been extremely ill in recent times after having fought bad health for some time.
