Based online to circumvent French regulations on providing French language content, the newly-launched Expat Radio aims to provide chat and nostalgia to Brits living in France.

Dave Hailwood, the former DJ behind the new venture, plans to lessen loneliness and unite Brits all across the country with his cosy mix of live chat, banter, news, music and discussion. He’s aware that most expats tune in to radio programmes from the UK to enjoy the familiar, friendly interaction, and hopes to provide homesick expats with an equally friendly alternative based on their unique situation within local communities.

Involvement by listeners is crucial, he believes, and will be offering the much-loved and missed British sense of humour along with the latest in music, sport, property and UK-related stories. The focus of the broadcasts will be firmly on living in France and enjoying the varieties of expat life the country has to offer. Above all, he wants to create an online expat community embracing all British residents across the Channel.

Hailwood, a resident in France for around 11 years, told reporters that he’s determined to cross the generation gap as regards mixing music from 80’s favourites through golden oldies to Motown, dance and hip hop. He believes his DJ background in Manchester will ensure he gets the right mix for his listeners, who’ll be encouraged to email and call in with their comments and views. His two colleagues,

MD Paul Kavanagh and website media director Peter Richards, added that BBC News, local news and hourly updates are part of the programme, with content coming in from editors worldwide on everything from politics to cookery and more. The overall aim of the new radio station is to give an English language alternative to French radio, considered by many expats to be repetitive, old fashioned and committed to too much bad language!.

The Expat Radio website can be found at www.ex-patradio.fr and began broadcasting at 9 a.m. French time on 21 March. Expats living in the Algarve can also access it online, adding their experiences and feelings about expat life in Portugal. Over 200,000 Brits are estimated to be living in France and, with the Algarve contingent added in, the service is sure to be a huge success.
