Uncertainly about where to relocate is beginning to haunt expats’ lives, but some countries are still attractive for professionals determined to make the move.

Immigration issues are causing uncertainty in many former expat hubs including the USA and UK, but determined expat professionals can still find a home for their talents and aspirations. A recent InterNations study identifies those countries which still welcome the best and the brightest by offering them great salaries and benefits as well as comfortable, well-balanced lifestyles.

It’s no surprise that Canada is on the preferred country list of many expats looking to relocate, as its many provinces offer higher wages and a great work-life balance set amidst stunning natural beauty. Leisure time spent exploring the spectacular wilderness and charming small towns is its own reward for a successful working week. In the big cites, activities include museums, theatre performances and endless sports opportunities, and music venues and restaurants give of their best. The English language ensures settling in is painless and fun.

East Asia is growing ever more popular for expats looking for challenges to spice up their working lives in an exotic environment, with Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore and Taiwan high on the list for job opportunities plus a totally different lifestyle. Family friendly, safe and with low unemployment and street crime, these East Asian destinations all offer strong economies, high quality health care and international education as well as English as a spoken language in most workplaces. Hong Kong salaries are more than satisfactory, although the island itself does have a high cost of living.

In Europe, Malta, Spain and Austria all have their attractions, with Malta and Spain boasting Mediterranean climates and an outdoor lifestyle as well as centuries of history and unique cultures. English is widely spoken in Spain, but Malta’s official language is descended from an archaic Sicilian/Arabic dialect. Even so, the island's fascinating history and its link to the medieval Knights of Malta attract enough expats and tourists to justify its English language usage. Austria is popular for its clean air and water as well as its reputation for health, wellbeing, ultra-modern infrastructure and straightforward transportation system.
