The burned bodies of a retired British couple living in Jamaica were found late last week.

According to local media, the charred bodies of Charlie Anderson and his wife Gayle were discovered in separate Mount Pleasant locations, with local police now treating their deaths as a double murder. The former Manchester residents also had wounds to their faces and necks and Gayle was found with her hands and feet tied, with her husband reported to have sustained gunshot wounds. The couple had recently lost £50,000 in a credit card scam.

Mr Anderson’s body was found close by a local primary school and his wife was found at a different location. A family member told local media the couple’s credit card had been wrongly used 45 times between August last year and last month, saying that Gayle had recently returned from a UK visit during which she’d secured copies of the fraudulent commercial transactions.

According to the couple’s son, they’d been married for 55 years and had worked tirelessly to build up their construction business and take care of their family. A former neighbour also praised the couple, saying Charlie was like a father to him and had helped him renovate his house in his spare time. The murdered couple had only lived in Jamaica for a year, having retired in 2017 after their new home was completed.

Local farmer Jerome Heslop said he’s totally baffled by the murders as the Andersons had given a great deal to the local community and were much-loved as a result. Local police are appealing to the community for help in solving the crime and believe the credit card fraud was related to the killings. Charlie was one of the Windrush generation who came to the UK to help with rebuilding the country after WWII and had looked forward to returning home for his retirement.
