According to the Foreign Office, a UK man convicted of allegedly selling cannabis in the UAE is now facing the death penalty. Although the suspect has not been named, a local UAE newspaper said he was 21 years old.

A court in Abu Dhabi has heard the man had provided an undercover officer with 20g of cannabis, which was worth 1,500 UAE Dirhams, or £262. The UK Foreign Office stated that it was in touch with the man and his legal team, adding that it would continue to offer consular assistance.

A Foreign Office spokesman said he could confirm that a UK national was currently facing capital punishment in the UAE. However, he said the Office was not able to confirm the particulars of the case.

The UAE newspaper report stated that the British national had been arrested in conjunction with a Syrian man who was 19 years old. After the sentence was ruled, the man’s mother fainted outside the court, added the newspaper.
