  • Welcome to...The Machine... 2 days ago Feng was born and raised in Shenyang, Liaoning, in Northeastern China. And this is where we were heading after cosmopolitan Shanghai—an industrial city, close to North Korea. Feng often speaks of his childhood in China in the 1970s and 1980s and while he has good memories of it, he has never...
  • And Now, A Bathroom Break on Chinese Toilets... 3 days ago Chinese like to warn me, the stupid Westerner, about two things: how spicy the food is (as if the bright red colour of it wasn’t a clue) and how difficult it will be for me to use the toilets. The first time the word “toilets” was mentioned during the trip was at Beijing Airport, when...

It’s just a cold, but I was coughing and I couldn’s sleep, so I got up. 5:30 a.m. We were leaving Shanghai at 9 a.m.—train, taxi, we hadn’t decided yet. I wanted the guys to sleep a few more hours, so I stepped out of the ... Related...
  • Pudong and the Concrete Jungle 4 days ago On the east side of the Huangpu River lies a world of concrete and steel, miles away from the city’s colonial past. Lujiazui is packed with skyscrapers, all higher than the other, and you find yourself tiny compared to the huge structures looming above your head. We went up the Oriental Pearl...
  • The Bund (外滩) 5 days ago Shanghai is most famous for its iconic waterfront and its futuristic landscape along the Huangpu River that divides the city between the modern Pudong and the more traditional Puxi area. I love reading Zhu's blog. I'm Canadian but she sheds light on my own country from her French point of view. Very honest and tackles a lot of subjects that most blogs don't. Lots of helpful expat tips as well.

Really great blog! Juliette has good writing and photography skills, with very practical information for those who are considering a permanent move to Canada from overseas. Really loved reading her posts about her trip around Central America earlier this year. A very refreshing look at a fairly well-trodden route. Keep it up!

I enjoy Zhu's blog tremendously. It provides the right balance of shared personnal experiences and useful tips and information about living in Canada, more particularly in Ottawa. It also is a great source of anecdotes and information on various travel destinations, with amazing pictures to boot! Definitely a winner in my book.
